As most of you are probably aware that Apple has launched iPad 3 or simply the “new iPad” whichever one you want to prefer calling, and with it a new firmware, iOS 5.1. Whenever a new version of the firmware gets launched people usually rush to update it to check out the new features. This is the mistake which many people usually make. Here is some information for those unlockers who want to update to iOS 5.1 on an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S.
iPhone 4S Unlock On iOS 5.1
First of all lets begin with iPhone 4S. We previously reported on new hardware solutions that unlocked the iPhone 4S, namely Gevey Ultra S, TPSIM, and Rebel SIM. All these SIMs worked to unlock the new iPhone 4S (GSM version) while there was a new version of TPSIM that unlocked the iPhone 4S (CDMA version).
Updating to iOS 5.1 on an iPhone 4S will result in your baseband being upgraded to 2.0.10. What that means is if you relied on unlock your iPhone 4S will get locked!
Appleneberry has confirmed that the new Gevey Ultra S will not unlock iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1. So folks DO NOT update to iOS 5.1 until we get more information.
iPhone 4 Unlock On iOS 5.1
Ah! iPhone 4 users who have been stuck with a locked iPhone 4 baseband 4.11.08 for an eternity. Well folks as the new firmware has been launched and with it comes the new baseband, 4.12.01. What this means is that the new baseband is on a higher level compared to the current one, in more simple words; it is harder to unlock. So as with the iPhone 4S DO NOT update to iOS 5.1.
Ultrasnow 1.2.6 & Gevey SIM
Those users who currently rely on unlocking the iPhone 4 via Gevey SIM or Ultrasnow there is an option for you to update to iOS 5.1 without changing the baseband.
You can update to iOS 5.1 by preserving the baseband which means you will still be able to use your iPhone 4 (Locked) on iOS 5.1. Follow the above link to see how to preserve the baseband
If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first! Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW! Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one. (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.) ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband)
iPhone Dev team has mentioned that they are going to release Ultrasnow 1.2.6 in the coming days ahead that will unlock iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Unfortunately no new basebands will get unlocked. So 4.11.08 users you will have to wait more.
